What Does Friendship Village of Bloomington’s 5-Star Medicare Rating Mean for You?

Friendship Village of Bloomington is proud to promote the fact that our senior living community was awarded a 5-star Medicare rating. But as a prospective resident, what exactly does that mean for you? Without understanding who awards that rating and how that rating is even determined, you may feel inclined to dismiss it as nothing more than a plaque collecting dust on the wall. But we can assure you that it is much more than that. In fact, the Medicare rating system can help you find the senior living community that is right for you, now and into the future.

What is the Medicare rating system?

When choosing a senior living community, how do you measure quality? Well, the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has a Five-Star Quality Rating System to do exactly that. Their system, which uses a scale of 1 to 5 stars, is designed to help older adults and their families and caregivers make an informed decision. Communities assigned a 5-star rating are considered above-average in quality, whereas a 1-star rating is meant to signal below-average quality.
In addition to the overall rating, the CMS also provides separate ratings for three categories: Health Inspections, Staffing, and Quality Measures.

  • Health Inspections is based on a community’s three most recent health inspections and investigations due to complaints.<
  • Staffing is calculated based on the number of hours of care provided on average to each resident each by a community’s nursing staff.
  • Quality Measures is a determination of how well the community’s staff is caring for the physical and clinical needs of their residents.

Benefits of a CCRC

Quality is but one metric for sizing up whether a senior living community is right for you. You should also be looking at the types of care a community provides for its residents. You may be healthy and able to live independently now, but that may not always be the case. No one can predict the future, but you can at least be prepared for whatever it holds in store for you.

A Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), which can also be referred to as a Life Care community, is built on the idea of being prepared for whatever lies ahead. They are typically home to an independent living community complete with a host of services and amenities that allow their residents to be active and engaged every day of their lives. But greater levels of care are available under the same roof, for if and when a resident should need them.

Peace of mind is important for both residents and their families. CCRCs offer the assurance that residents will be cared for, both now and in the future.
